Welcome to Reception!
At Hollin, we follow children’s interest whilst teaching through a topic to spark imagination, broaden children’s horizons and open up new, exciting learning opportunities.
Our topic for this half term is … Terrific Tales!
We will begin our topic by asking the children to re-tell traditional tales in their own words and encouraging them to use story language. We are then going to explore humour and stereotypes in alternate tales. Will the three pigs seek revenge against the big bad wolf? Do all Princesses where dresses and live in a castle?
Before the end of the term we will be fully immersing ourselves into Christmas! We will learn the traditional Nativity and having some fun with the book ‘The Stink Before Christmas’. We are hoping to have a special visit from a special visitor with a fluffy white beard and a velvet red coat.
This year Nursery and Reception will come together to preform ‘Sing-a-long a Christmas’ with some classic Christmas songs that you will be familiar with. Group parts and costumes letters to follow.
In literacy, some of our key texts are:
· ‘The Three Little Pigs’
· ‘The Three Super Pigs’
· ‘The Nativity’
· ‘The Stink Before Christmas’
In Mathematics, our focus is number, we will explore:
· Finding one more than a given number
· Finding one less than a given number
· Identifying and writing numerals beyond 10
· Ordering numbers to 0-20
· An introduction to 2D shapes
· An introduction to 3D shapes
In phonics, we will be introducing phonemes (letter sounds) and graphemes (the written letter) according to the systematic phonic scheme, Read Write Inc.
At least one relative should have an active Tapestry Account for your child and you should be receiving notifications of observations made on your child. The children love sharing news and significant events with us in class so please feel free to upload photographs, drawings etc for them to share with us. Please speak to Miss Hill if you are experiencing any difficulties with this.
We love to share our wonderful learning experiences here in reception on X (formally known as Twitter), so feel free to follow either Reception’s twitter page.
Children in Reception do not require a PE kit, we do however, kindly ask you to provide a change of clothes and spare wellies to be kept in school.
Reading books will be changed on a Monday and Thursday. Please sign your child’s reading record for us to change the reading book.
