At Hollin Primary School we believe that English skills are vital to the development of our pupils, so that they are well prepared for their future life. Our aim is to deliver a rich and inspiring English curriculum, in order for our pupils to develop the knowledge and skills that they need in order to become confident and effective communicators in the outside world.

Writing Assembly -Spring 1 2023
Each term, we set our pupils a writing challenge. The theme for the challenge differs each time and there is a constraint of using no more than 100, in which to complete the challenge. Many of our pupils engage well with this challenge. Winners of the challenge are celebrated and shared in an assembly, and on our school website and X. Additionally, the winning entries are displayed on our 'Wonderful Writing' display in a prominent area of school. You can read more about our challenges below.

What do you want to do when you are older, and why?
Pupils in Reception -Year 6 were invited to take part in the writing challenge. Winners were announced in assembly on Friday 3rd May. We received 95 entries - WOW! A huge thank you and well done to everybody who got involved with this challenge. It was great to read about aspirations for the future! Winners were shared and celebrated on our Twitter page and winning entries displayed on our writing display.

Who is your favourite person, and why?
Pupils in Years 1-Year 6 are invited to take part in the new writing challenge. Winners were announced on Friday 2nd February in assembly. We received 77 entries overall - a huge thank you and well done to everybody that has got involved. A huge well done to our winners. Their writing will be displayed on the 'Wonderful Writing' display on the main corridor.

Pupils in Years 1-Year 6 are invited to take part in our current writing challenge. We received an amazing 85 entries! Wow! A huge well done to our six winners. They were shared and celebrated in assembly on Friday 6th October 2023.

We received 57 entries across school and enjoyed reading them all! It proved a challenge to pick just six winners, as the quality of entries was so high.

At Hollin, we proudly showcase a range of writing from across year groups from Nursery to Year 6. Our display is in a prominent area of school and is updated each term.

At Hollin, pupils in Year 1-6 take part in a weekly spelling challenge. Spellings are shared with pupils and sent home with them to learn, ready for the following week.
From Spring 2023, we are going to introduce a 'Spelling Superstar award' across year groups 1-6. Class teams will choose two pupils from their class, to receive the award each half term. They will be presented with our special certificate and their names added to our new display. There are many reasons that pupils could receive this award. Pupils may receive this award for consistently learning their spellings, or for improving their spelling scores week on week.

The first recipients of our 'Spelling Superstars' award were announced in assembly on Friday 17th February 2023. Their faces are now proudly displayed on our spelling display and were shared via our Twitter feed.

'Spelling Superstars' for the Summer term 2023 were shared and celebrated on Thursday 25th May 2023. Their faces are now proudly displayed on our spelling display and were shared via our Twitter feed.

Richard O'Neil and Michelle Russell
On Wednesday 17th May 2023 we were lucky enough to be joined by two fantastic authors, Richard O'Neil and Michelle Russell. Richard and Michelle have worked together to co-write 'Rag n Bone Bear' and Michelle has illustrated it. We welcomed Richard into school and Michelle via Zoom. Cath Howe
On Wednesday 24th May 2023, we welcomed author, Cath Howe, into school to speak to our Year 5 and Year 6 classes. Cath Howe has written a number of best selling books, her most recent is called 'My Life on Fire'.

A special thanks to the staff at Madeleine Lindley book shop for offering this fantastic opportunity to our pupils.
On Friday 16th June 2023, we held our first 'Hollin Spelling Bee' for Years 5 and 6. They were tasked with spelling some challenging words. From this event, we had three finalists, who were invited to take part in a competition against children from other schools in our PiraMidd collaborative group.
On Tuesday 27th June 2023, our three finalists visited Parkfield Primary, to take part in the 'Inter-school Spelling Bee'. There were nine finalists taking part, from three of our PiraMidd schools. There were some very tricky spellings, in order to determine the winner. The three children, who represented Hollin, were amazing! They returned to Hollin with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. A huge well done to them!

Our next Spelling Bee will be in the Summer term 2024.
