1st Autumn term 2023
Welcome to Reception!
At Hollin, we follow children’s interest whilst teaching through a topic to spark imagination, broaden children’s horizons and open up new, exciting learning opportunities.
Our topic for this half term is … Wild Woods!
We will be talking about the natural colours that are around us and identifying emotions. We will explore the feelings of characters and we will wonder if the Gruffalo exists.
The Early Years Foundation Stage will be taking part in ‘National Nursery Rhyme Week’ and performing ‘Sign-a-long with us’.
In literacy, some of our key texts are:
- ‘On my way home’ By Gill Murphy
- ‘The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas
- ‘Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson
- ‘Where the wild things are’
- ‘The wild woods’ By Simon James
In Mathematics, our focus is number, we will explore:
- Identifying and grouping colours
- Number as a means to identify items in a group
- Subitising
- Reciting number 0- 10
- Recognising numerals 0-10
- Writing numerals
- Exposure to data handling- tally charts and pictogram.
In phonics, we will be introducing phonemes (letter sounds) and graphemes (the written letter) according to the systematic phonic scheme, Read Write Inc.
We have introduced our money reward system and the children have fully embraced this. We will be completing the statutory baseline assessment with each child and embedding the class routines.
Please look out for your Tapestry Account activation email.
Children in Reception do not require a PE kit. Please can we kindly ask you to write names in your child’s uniform and bring a bag of spare clothes to leave in school.
Reading books will be changed on a Monday and Friday. Please sign your child’s reading record for us to change the reading book. Homework, new sounds and red words will be given out on a Friday. Homework will be collected in on Wednesday. Please feel free to upload any significant events on tapestry for us to share with the class as this is important to us.
