1st Autumn Term 2019

Hello and welcome to Year 5M! Another year with Mr Drinkwater, Mrs Brine and I, you lucky bunch.

We have many activities planned for the year ahead so make sure you check back regularly to keep up to date.

This half term our topic is “Is there anything out there?” – Looking into the depths of space.

This half term, the children will learn about:

English – Narrative and recount writing

Spellings – ious, tious, cious, homophones

Punctuation – DASH? Paragraphs, Parenthesis, Colons and semi-colons

Maths - Place value, addition/subtraction/ statistics.

Spellings will be handed out on a Wednesday to be tested on the following Tuesday. Homework will generally consist of handwriting/spelling work and maths on the reverse.

Other items to remember:

P.E. is on Wednesdays so please ensure that your child has a P.E. kit in school on this day. Your child should have a white t-shirt, black shorts or jogging pants and trainers (pumps should only be worn for gymnastics).

Each child will have a day when they will read to either Mr Drinkwater or myself. However, it is VERY IMPORTANT that your child has their book in school every day. House points are given for children having their book in school AND having a dated signature to say they have read at home. You should continue to read with your child on a regular basis and ask questions about what has been read (A question sheet has been given to all children to take home with ideas for questions). It is not necessary to read the entire book in one night. Rather, it is more beneficial to read 2 or 3 pages, or a chapter in larger books, and then discuss what they have read, taking the opportunity to find out the meaning of unfamiliar words or concepts. It is expected that children will change their reading books AT LEAST once every 2 weeks.

Should you wish to discuss your child's progress or any issues, it would be helpful if you could see me AFTER school.

Thank you

Mr McDickens
