1st Autumn Term 2018

Hello and welcome to Year 4! We are really looking forward to the year ahead.

There are some really lovely activities happening this year so please check back here regularly to make sure you are kept up to date.

This half term our topic is 'Land, Sea or Air?' The topic is a science based theme about animals and their habitats.

This half term, the children will learn about:

English - Information Texts/ Narrative – stories/ poetry

Spellings – Homophones/ ‘s’ spelt ‘sc’/ ‘sion endings

Grammar - Correct use of was and were, do, did and done

Punctuation - apostrophes for possession

Maths - Place value and ordering/ addition/ subtraction/ fractions/ data handling/ multiplication – times tables

Homework

This will generally be handed out on a Friday and should be completed and returned to school the following Thursday. It will consist of an English and Maths activity based on the work we have been doing during the previous week.

Other items to remember:

P.E.

P.E. is on Wednesday so please ensure that your child has a P.E. kit in school on this day. Your child should have a white t-shirt, black shorts or jogging pants and trainers (pumps should only be worn for gymnastics).

Reading

Each child will have a day when they will read to Mrs Eardley. However, it is VERY IMPORTANT that your child has their book in school every day. House points are given for children having their book in school AND having a dated signature to say they have read at home. You should continue to read with your child on a regular basis and ask questions about what has been read. It is not necessary to read the entire book in one night. Rather, it is more beneficial to read 2 or 3 pages, or a chapter in larger books, and then discuss what they have read, taking the opportunity to find out the meaning of unfamiliar words or concepts. It is expected that children will change their reading books AT LEAST once every 2 weeks.

General

Should you wish to discuss your child's progress or any issues, it would be helpful if you could see me AFTER school.

Thank you

Miss Catlin
